Rains Over Babel selected as Colombia’s entry for the Oscars and Goya Awards 2027

Cinemien is proud to announce that Rains Over Babel, directed by Gala del Sol, has been selected by the Colombian Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences as Colombia’s official submission for the 2027 Academy Awards. The film is now in contention for a nomination for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. In addition, the film has also been selected to represent Colombia at the 2027 Goya Awards in the Best Ibero-American Film category.

The selections for the Oscars and Goya Awards mark a new milestone for Rains Over Babel, which has enjoyed an impressive international journey since its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The debut feature by Colombian-Spanish director Gala del Sol was also screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and has since found its way to festivals and audiences around the world.

Rains Over Babel is set in the nightclub Babel, a mysterious place where mortals come face to face with La Flaca – the personification of death. In this enchanting setting, visitors try to outsmart her by gambling years of their lives in pursuit of their own personal quests. Among them are Dante, who searches for answers about his past before his time with La Flaca runs out; Monet, who tries to reclaim his slowly decaying body; Timbí and Uma, who will stop at nothing to save their loved ones; and Jacob, who finds himself caught between fear and liberation on the eve of his debut as a drag performer.

The story is infused with mysticism, eccentric charm and absurdist flair. Love, loss, faith, identity and liberation come together in a magical-realist universe where gender diversity is simply part of life and nothing is quite what it seems. With colourful production design, a distinctive punk edge and surprising details, Gala del Sol creates an idiosyncratic world in which the boundary between life and death is constantly shifting.

With its official selection to represent Colombia at both the Academy Awards and the Goya Awards, Rains Over Babel now enters the next stage of its international awards journey. Later this year, it will be announced which international submissions have secured a place on the shortlist for Best International Feature Film at the Academy Awards.
